This is so cool - I'm jealous. I had always thought that these things were longer-term, so it's great that it doesn't involve any career break-type negotiations for people. Look forward to hearing about it when it happens.

WOW! Well done - that's really exciting. Will there be other library people travelling with you or will you be out on your own?

Hi Katharine,

Yes, I've not been updating as much in the past month or so as I'm trying to get the final draft of my portfolio done and have made a first attempt at my statement, which I'm finding rather tricky!

Anyway, this session was an in-house one as a number of my colleagues are in the process of developing a disaster plan and they were feeding back their progress to date. The Information Centre includes the Museum and Records Management, as well as the Library, so we have a fair amount of items, artifacts and records that need to be considered. Work has been ongoing within each section to identify key resources that would need to be saved/replaced, and then to prioritise these across the Centre as a whole. We looked at the floor maps that had been produced (the Museum collection in particular is in numerous areas) and then went on a walk around the building to check these maps in situ. Plans have been produced to cope with 2 levels of disaster e.g. minor flood in one part of building vs major incident completely shutting building and affecting all areas.

It was interesting and useful - lots of work for those involved though!

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for the comment - I'm deep in the middle of final portfolio production at the moment (have taken out a lot and it still seems enormous to me!) and have attempted a (very) first draft of my statement. I know exactly what you mean about the temptation to produce more - especially where you suddenly run out of space in the 1000 words and that one extra piece of evidence might just help! Hope you've been able to sort your evidence out now - have you started on the statement yet? Good luck with yours as well.

Just been flicking through some of your older entries - you don't seem to have posted much recently - and found this one.
I was invited to a Disaster management session a while back to discuss our disaster plan and start thinking about modifying/building on it. Since then I haven't heard anything about it - I should really contact the organisers and see what is going on.
Did you find the session helpful? What sort of things did it cover?

Wow, this is impressive! I'd have been terrified at the thought of talking about the portfolio - fantastic piece of evidence though, eh ;)

I've recently attended a second chartership event too, and found it so much more helpful than the first one because you know more, and you've done a bit of practical work. I'm finding it quite tricky at the moment though to work out how to use my evidence, and wondering whether to 'produce' more, which is just becoming a distraction, to be quite honest!

Sounds like you're getting there though. Good luck :)

I have been following the 5 weeks to a social library course now for...er...5 weeks. So far, I have just finished week 1! Like you say, it quickly sparks off ideas as to how blogs can improve library services. I download many of the presentations (such as Anne's) and listen to them on my mp3 player. Anne's use of blogs to advertise collections and new items is an excellent idea.

Hi there

It was great to see you last Tuesday, and I'm really glad that you're finding the Social Libraries presentations useful.

Maybe, now that Cilip is offering blogging for groups and branches, the London Branch might think about starting one up ...

Best
