Awarded ESU/CILIP Travelling Librarian Award 2007

I’m thrilled to have been awarded the ESU/CILIP Travelling Librarian Award for 2007!

This award, jointly sponsored by the English Speaking Union and CILIP, will enable me to undertake a study tour in the
United States for two weeks in October 2007. It is designed to encourage US/UK contacts in the library world and the establishment of permanent links. I plan to visit a number the National Library of Medicine, the American Pharmacists Association and a number of university pharmacy departments. Of great relevance to my current role I expect it to be a rewarding personal experience as well.

Action: Plan Trip!

Speed networking event worked extrememly well, met a number of people from different sectors. Interesting conversations about how easy it is to move sector.

Discussed the content and structure of draft portolio. Action points include

1) Make amendments to structure of portfolio as discussed.

2) Write analysis of process of writing journal article – focus on personal development.

3) Acknowledgments page to include confidentiality statement – at beginning of portfolio.

CILIP in London talk – Social Libraries

Social Libraries: Collaborating worldwide from the comfort of home by Anne Welsh.

This talk was about ’Five weeks to a social library’, an innovative and free US-based online course for teaching librarians about social software (such as blogs, RSS, social bookmarking and wikis) and its use in libraries that ran earlier in 2007. Anne was one of the presenters who, drawing on her experience of setting up a blog for DrugScope, created a screencast presentation to demonstrate how common library activities such as acquisitions, cataloguing and enquiry work can be transformed quickly and easily into blog entries.

Anne spoke about the origins of the course and the value of international collaboration, as well as discussing the role of social software in libraries. She discussed how the 5 week programme did not simply guide participants on how to, for example, set a blog up, but discussed content that could be included and other practical applications as well as suggesting ways of convincing colleagues and management that introducing this software is useful. When organising the course preference had been given to ‘nuts and bolts’ style presentations that had an obvious practical application.

Near the end of her talk Anne spoke of some of the successes to come out of the course; participents already beginning to implement the projects they had been asked to devise.

Chartership and Beyond Event at Lewisham Library

Attended my first ‘Chartership and Beyond’ event in a support role. Very interesting to hear the presentations again at a later stage in the chartership procedings and it certainly reminded me of a few points that I had forgotten but which are very relevant to writing up. Plenty of time for discussion where the attendees were encouraged to think of specific examples to meet the critera and gave an opportunity for them to ask the CILIP representative, the CSO and myself questions. I was pleased that I was able to answer the questions that I was asked (having stated that I hadn’t finished chartering myself yet!) and I do feel quite confident that I know now what I should be including, just a case of taking everything I have collected and organising it and making sure that the evidence says what I want it to. I think one of the hardest things for me will be to decide what evidence can be excluded – the size of the portfolios I have seen (both online and the example at this event) vary so wildly but I already know that what I have at the moment will need to be weeded.

Two main things I was reminded of especially – keep focussing on the criteria at every stage of writing up and remember to use SMART goals in planning -

CILIP in London Talk – The impact of information services in the voluntary sector

Talk from Christine Goodair, Head of Website & Information Services at DrugScope. This talk provided an introduction to working in information services in the voluntary sector, the variety of work that it is possible to undertake and some of the more negative (or challenging) aspects. Discussion of the DrugScop blog (and RSS feed) and how it has proved such a success. A very positive aspect of working in the voluntary sector appears to be that there is great scope for initiative but this is balanced by limited funding and sometimes uncertainty about future funding/sustainability – “an exciting if not entirely secure place to work”.

Email discussion with mentor re blogs and discussion lists

Brief email conversation with mentor after a discusion on LIS-CILIP-REG about blogs and their value in recording chartership progress which I took part in.
Action point: to ensure that I keep a record of postings to discussion lists as an example of criteria 4 – breadth of professional knowledge and understanding of the wider professional context.
